Republic of Luna Timeline: 2026

Short Story: 6050 words/14 pages

Format: Adobe Reader (pdf)

The early Luna settlements will shape the society that follows just as the ranchers, miners, and dirt farmers shaped the American west. But Luna will be unique. For instance, every aspect of human survival will depend on a machine in some way. The air you breathe, the food you eat, and even the roof over your head will all be manmade and subject to all that entails. Just to take a walk outside a person will need to don elaborate vacuum suits that perform flawlessly day in and day out. One mistake will cost you your life.

Another aspect of living on the moon not generally discussed is the question of privacy, or the lack thereof. Even now there are cameras all around us in our daily lives but that will increase tremendously in a lunar society. Cameras and other sensors will be everywhere. There may not be a camera in every bedroom but there will be sensors in them. How will people deal with a total lack of privacy?

Aldrin Station is one of the first big underground settlements being constructed on the moon. Located in Alphonsus Crater’s eastern rim, it presently holds almost two thousand men and women. This is a story not about a place, but about the people who live there and the society they shape.
